AN OFFICE FROM A TREE
Heirlooms from scratch.
SHOP OWNER: Lester Gillett
LOCATION: Independence, MO
I made this desk from a red oak tree that we cut down at a co-worker's dad's place. We had the log milled, then we let it air dry for four months before we finally had it kiln dried.
Most of the wood was #2 and #3 common--lots of knots and bad places--but that was the look I was after.
The top has a 2-in. oak frame with an oak veneer plywood panel. I stained it with dark oak dye and finished it off with six coats of water-based polyurethane.
I also made a bookcase of the same wood to go with the desk.. . . Lester Gillett
