Pennsylvania German Keepsake Chest

PA DUTCH CHEST
A splendid use of scrap and shop time!

SHOP OWNER: Mark Beckert
LOCATION: Hopatcong, NJ

One of my favorite projects is this Pennsylvania German Keepsake Chest. I was itching for some shop time so, with some scrap pieces of oak and maple, I went to work and this is what I came up with. This chest is pretty sizable, 21" wide, 12" high, 9" deep, and weights a hefty 14 pounds.

It's personalized with twelve painted hearts, two Moravian stars, two Distlefinks on top, and of course, the maker's name right out front in bold letters. The chest is now almost filled with baby shoes and other memorabilia from my two sons' infant days. Now that my wife and I are expecting a daughter in a matter of weeks, I'm hoping my splines are going to hold tight!
