SOFT SOUTHERN COMFORT
A demonstration of caring.
SHOP OWNER: John Richards
LOCATION: Hickory, NC
I decided I needed to have a working example for a sculptural chair-making demonstration Iíll be doing at this yearís Klingspore show on Oct. 29th in Hickory, NC. While I was designing the chair, hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. Since those people needed help, I decided to make two chairs. I will raffle off this one with the proceeds donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund. If all tickets sell, we will have raised $5000 to help those victims in need.
I custom designed this Maloof-style occasional chair for a person of my dimensions. I started out with a full-scale drawing, made working templates, and then went on to make the chair. There are no mechanical fasteners. The joinery includes mortise and tenon, dowels, and biscuits for the back rail. It is solid mahogany and required a total of 55 hours to build. The title of this piece is "Soft Southern Comfort" because it has no hard lines.
