FIRSTS FROM A NEW SHOP
A beautiful piece of spalted maple provides inspiration.

Here is a project that I just finished that had many firsts for me. I just moved into a new house/shop and sold most of my old machines prior to the move. I took the plunge on a combination machine for my new shop and so this project gave me a chance to learn the ins and outs of my new machine, a Robland NLX-31, along with making extensive use of the hand tools that I have always used.
The inspiration for this project came from two places; the great cabinets of James Krenov and a beautiful piece of spalted maple I acquired about a year ago from Canada. I used knife hinges for the first time ever, and in a nod to Krenov, I used dowels to join the cabinet sides to the top/bottom. The cabinet is made of cherry, with drawers out of alder and canary wood for the drawer fronts. I resawed the maple panels for a bookmatch effect. The back of the cabinet is a frame and panel that is set into a rabbet in the cabinetís back.
I choose to use round cutouts for drawer pulls because I didn't want to lose any depth to pulls that protruded. For the door handles, I wanted something that was also round and black to compliment the black spalt patterns. I would have liked to have made my own turned handles but donít have a lathe yet. However, I happened to see these black steel pulls for 1.75 each at my local woodworking supplier.
The finish is Tung Oil and paste wax.. . . Paul DeWitt
