Doug's New Mantle

CARVED MANTLE
A gift from the heart, crafted by hand.

SHOP OWNER: Doug and Mary Ridley
LOCATION: Paducah, KY

Here is a new mantle I carved for my wife for Valentine's Day. It took me about three weeks. I started with a 2" x 10" white pine board, 15 feet long, cut it into two pieces and laminated them together to make a 4" x 9" x 7 feet long beam.

I planed the front and top, then drew a pattern on paper and transferred it to the wood with carbon paper. Next, I numbered each layer one through five. Using a router I routed out each layer starting with the deepest layer and going shallower on each successive layer. Next, I cut my paper pattern apart, and using carbon paper again, I redrew each layer separately.

Now I was ready to start carving. I roughed out everything with gouges and a mallet, then switched to small chisels, and finally did some of the fine details with a small rotary grinder and diamond bits. I finished it with a coat of golden oak stain and three coats of Deft varnish.
