MAPLE AND CHERRY DESKS
Influenced by a Fine Woodworking article.

I built these desks for a repeat client of mine that had purchased a desk from me for one of their children three years earlier. The design for these two came directly from a Fine Woodworking article. In the article, the desk is primarily cherry. For these two desks, I went with maple for the bases with cherry tops and turned rosewood knobs.
The desks are essentially the same design as the one in the article with only minor changes made during construction to suit my clients. For protection during use, a piece of glass will cover the tops. All of the drawers run on Blum concealed slides which are easier to install and better looking (in my opinion) than standard side mounted slides despite the additional work required in modifying the drawer backs.
The desks have fold down fronts with sliding keyboard trays and slide out breadboard writing surfaces above the drawer boxes. I turned the knobs from rosewood on my old Sears lathe that I use for all my spindle style turning. The desks have a shellac finish on the bases and an oil/varnish combination on the tops.. . .
