Hickory Dining Table and Chairs

CHAIR BURNOUT
Always a challenge, making eight at once was overwhelming.

SHOP OWNER: Steve Basso
LOCATION: Delavan, WI

Recently, I received a commission to build a 42x72 inch pedestal dinning room table, six dinning room chairs, two swivel chairs, and a dinning room cabinet to store all their silver, all made from hickory. I made all the parts to the table including the pedestal and the apron. Resawing thin strips and gluing them back together, while clamped around a form, is the technique I used to make the apron.

I never made chairs before and looked forward to this new challenge. It wouldn't have been so bad if there were only a couple of chairs but eight all at once ended up to be a lot of work and took a long time to make. I don't look forward to making chairs again in the future. Hickory Swivel Chairs Hickory Chairs

The design for the silverware cabinet required it to fit a specific wall space and traffic area. I finished everything using a catalyzed lacquer.
I very seldom use published plans. Normally I gather up as much information as I think necessary for a particular project, like books and pictures and many times make sketches. In the end, the clients were very happy with everything.
