A lovely extension table from home-milled wood.

These photos show a table I made with some cherry I sawed with my sawmill and dried in my kiln. I was inspired to make this table by an article in the July/August 1996 issue of Woodworker's Journal magazine, which describes an old-style English pub table and how to make it.
The table in the magazine was made of oak, but I made mine of cherry to match the other furniture I had made for our house. The first picture (above) shows the table with the extensions retracted. The second (right) shows me wondering to myself, "Acorns don't grow on cherry; I hope I can turn this to look like the first one."
The third photo (left) shows the table fully extended--almost 5 feet long. The magazine article called for the top to be made of plywood, framed with solid wood. I am not particularly fond of plywood, so I chose to make the top out of quarter sawn cherry for the panel and plain-sawn cherry for the breadboard ends.
I was anxious to use some of the quartersqawn lumber I had cut on my mill, and I was also curious to find out how much wood movement there would be on a glue-up of this size using quartered lumber. Well, it has been almost three winters since I made the table. The top moves about 3/16 in. over a season. I certainly can live with that, because I allowed for it when I built it. The final photo shows the table fully opened. I put on six coats of clear natural Deft Danish Oil Finish and three coats of Johnson's paste wax, then gave the table a good buffing.
Although I don't intend to open a pub anytime soon, I can easily sense that I am in one while sitting at the table with some friends, quaffing down a few cold ones.. . . Brian Bailey
