Walnut Veneered Desk

RAISING THE BAR
A special gift for a special graduate.

SHOP OWNER: Jim Toews
LOCATION: Walla Walla, WA

I completed this desk last year for my wife. It was a graduation present when she passed the Bar exam. It was my first attempt at veneering, making cock-beaded drawers, and frame-and-panel construction.
I used local maple as a secondary wood for internal frames, drawers, and such. I purchased all lumber rough-cut from a local supplier and do all my own stock preparation.
4-Way Bookmatched Veneered Panel

The desk is my own design and utilizes curly walnut for the visible solid wood parts, walnut burl veneer for all panels, drawer fronts, and the top. The top consists of three panels within a frame. Each panel features four-way bookmatched veneer.
Walnut Veneered Drawers

The finish starts with a coat of Watco Oil, followed by several coats of dewaxed garnet shellac. I derive a great sense of satisfaction from designing my own furniture and making it from rough wood. I also found this to be quite a learning experience, but as my wife likes to point out, this was also a wonderful opportunity to acquire new tools!
