A CLASSIC SIX BOARD CHEST
Includes a hidden drawer that locks!
SHOP OWNER: Jim Kyle
LOCATION: Wantage, NJ
I just finished this blanket chest for my granddaughter. It was a long time in the making but is ready just in time for Christmas.
The construction is straightforward in the fashion of the typical 6-board chest. The material used is black cherry, locally cut, that has been air dried for about 15 years. I lined the inside of the chest with red cedar.
I wish I could say that the dovetails were hand cut, but my skill level has not reached that degree of expertise yet. I keep reminding myself the first 100 years are the hardest! Instead, I used the Keller Dovetail Jig. I was quite pleased with the results of my efforts and how easy the jig is to setup to make dovetailed joints.
Although not really a secret compartment, on the back of the chest there is access to a full-length locking drawer, housed in the skirt of the chest.
The finish is six coats of clear water-based satin finish poly. To complete the finish, I applied paste wax for the final protection.
An enjoyable project, it now goes on to my granddaughter for her inspection. I think she will be kind in her assessment because that's how grandchildren are, and this is what being a Grandfather is all about.. . . Jim Kyle
