Shaker CD Cabinet

SHAKER CD CABINET
New function for an old style.

SHOP OWNER: Jeff Givens
LOCATION: Sykesville, MD

I made this Shaker-style CD Cabinet as a birthday present for my sister. It's made of cherry and joined with through and sliding dovetails. To be able to reach those CDs at the back of the drawers, I used Accuride slides with one inch of over-travel. The wood, which I bought at a sawmill in the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania, was finished with Watco oil and three coats of garnet shellac.

Because the wood had only been air-dried, I was concerned how it would behave in the dry air in the house during the winter; but it's been three months now and, although it has shrunk somewhat, I haven't had any checking.

This was the first real piece of furniture that I've made; and, although it didn't turn out perfect--what ever does?--I was very pleased with it.
