Virgil Johnson's Highboy

CHERRY HIGHBOY
A year-long project from custom-cut lumber.

SHOP OWNER: Virgil Johnson
LOCATION: Versailles, KY

This highboy is the largest project that I have built to date. It took almost a year of my spare time. I built it fom plans found in some back issues of Woodworker's Journal that were given to me by a friend. All of the wood except the lowboy sides and drawer fronts (which all came from the same board) was cut from trees on my brother-in-law's farm.

I made the legs made from 12/4 stock. I used cherry throughout except for the drawers, which I made with ash sides and soft maple raised-panel bottoms. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. The back of the top chest is frame and panel construction, the pulls are from Ball & Ball, and the finish is four coats of Deftoil with no stain.
