A story stick does the trick.

I built this headboard for a friend to go in his lake cabin. He wanted it to match his home's nautical decor, so I designed and built it with half a ship's wheel as the centerpiece. The wheel itself is made of red oak. The rest is ash, and it is finished with tung oil and poly.
I turned the spindles and the handles myself without the aid of a duplicator. I used a "story stick" and took my time. I practiced in poplar and finally ended up with four good matches in red oak. Overall, it was a tremendous learning experience, as I am a novice woodworker. I am pleased with the result.. . . Russell Svenningsen
