A CLASSIC HOME FOR SILVERWARE
Traditional hand skills are the rule for this woodworker.

This Silver Chest features a solid mahogany case with figured birch veneer drawer fronts and top panel. The chest, by design, sits on a stand and fits into a lip of molding. This allows the user to remove the chest and set it on the table during place setting.
The top panel is two pieces of book matched veneer, seamed for fishbone visual effects. The legs have tapers on all four sides and come to a heavy diamond at the bottom. Various molding planes helped create the molding for the base.
The drawer sides and back are quarter-sawn sycamore. The joints for the drawers are hand cut dovetails. All joinery was hand cut with the exception of the splined case miters.
The inside of the top compartment and the bottom drawer are flocked in a wine color flocking. The hardware is brass and ebony. The quartered hinges for the top are hand mortised and totally hidden when the lid is closed. The hinges support the lid with stops that disappear into the bottom of the frame. The finish is hand applied garnet shellac, French polished, followed by a topcoat of Briwax.. . . Steve Wargo
