RED OAK BOOKSTAND
A befitting stand to display a family treasure.

I made this bookstand for my mom and dad for Christmas. Back in June of this year, Dad saw the design on the Internet. He printed the picture and asked if I could make it. I decided to make it for a Christmas/Birthday gift.
I used red oak, which I planed down to 5/8" thick. The top measures 16 " x 22" with a slight curve along the front edge. To make the top I had to glue up four pieces, which I joined with biscuits.
The front leg is also a glue-up. The very top measures six inches and tapers to 20 inches at the bottom. I had to dado out the center of the back to accept the third (rear) leg. The depth of the front leg to back leg is 14 inches. I think this looks right, considering all I had to go by was a picture.
I finished the bookstand with two coats of Minwax Dark Walnut stain and Waterlox, which I used for the first time. I just wiped on three coats with an old t-shirt and was very happy with the way it looked. It gave the piece that "professional" look that I was after.
My dad intends to use it to display a bible that has been in the family for 50 years. I engraved the words, Holy Bible, at the top of the curve. It was a nice touch and my parents are very happy with the results. I was equally pleased with the way it turned out. It was challenging but fun to make. I hope it lasts as long as the bible has. Mom and Dad, I hope you enjoy the stand for many years to come and I Love You!. . . Bernie McGivern
