SPALTED MAPLE CHEST
A visit to a local sawmill yields a treasure for this woodworker.
SHOP OWNER: David Maudlin
LOCATION: Salem, IN
This is my version of the "Treasure Chest" from the July edition of Wood Magazine. I substituted spalted maple for the plywood panels and cedar for the plywood bottom. The frame and top are cherry. The finish I used is boiled linseed oil followed by a wiping varnish.
The maple was 2C, which I found at the local sawmill. The sawmill owner had sawed it about three years ago but the buyer rejected it. It had been bundled up and sitting outside ever since. There was lots of damage from the weather and heat but I thought that made it prettier. Besides, I am an old tightwad and this gave me a chance to make something out of someone else's trash.. . .
