GLASS-FRONT BOOKCASE
A fitting use for wide boardsSHOP OWNER: Virgil Johnson
LOCATION: Versailles, KYThis bookcase is my version of a piece that was originally published in Fine Woodworking. I built it last year from some 12-in.-wide walnut that I had sawn about ten years earlier.
It was designed as a bookcase but now holds my children's video collection. The back is made from ship-lapped, 1/2-in.-thick walnut. The shelves are joined to the sides with sliding dovetails, and the top is joined with through dovetails. I attached the top molding to the sides with a dovetailed key to cope with seasonal movement. The finish is Deftoil.
