Applied carvings dress up this thoughtful shower gift..

I built this chest as a baby shower gift for my brother and his wife. They plan to use it as a toybox in their greatroom. It took me a couple weeks to make, working a little each night and on the weekends.
I built the box from solid 3/4-in. red oak. The carvings are actually appliques that I just glued on. I cut the bottom molding on my bandsaw.
Safety was an important design factor. I installed a piano hinge across the back of the box and used lid support hinges--one at each end of the lid--so the little hands would not get smashed. I also stepped down the front panel to make sure no fingers get caught.
I finished the box with two coats of Minwax golden oak stain followed by three coats of GF semi-gloss oil-based polyurethane for protection.
