My wife wanted a trellis/arbor at our front entry, and, of course, she wanted it to be different from most. So, I built the one shown here, made entirely from 4 x 4 fence posts. Basically, it was a bandsaw-and-glue-up project.
I was worried that weather conditions would cause the scrolls to split and chunks to fall off, so I resawed the posts into 3/4-in. planks and glued up four panels. Then I laminated them into two 1-1/2-in.-thick panels and cut my scrolls from them.
The arch is made of posts resawn to 1-1/2 in. thick boards and edge glued to make up sufficient width to accommodate the curves. The turned pieces are 2-3/8 in. in diameter at the thickest points.
Applying five coats of finish did not improve my disposition. There will be a flowerpot at the base of each scroll come next spring.. . . Lee Brubaker
