This Gothic cross is a copy of an old original.
SHOP OWNER: Alan Young
LOCATION: Ypsilanti, MI
I built this Gothic cross for Washtenaw Christian Academy. It was made to be given to the school as a gift from the graduating class of 2001.
The original design came from a cross that hangs in First Methodist Church of Saline, Michigan. The unknown designer and builder was apparently a past member of the church.
The cross is made from red oak and measures 29" x 48" x 3". The applied carvings are real wood. I got them from Rockler. They were similar if not identical to the original. (If Lee Grindinger lived closer, I might have left it at his shop for his elves to carve.)
I attempted to retain all design elements in the original except the color. The original cross was a medium to light colored stain; but I felt a darker color would suit this design better, so I used Minwax Jacobean stain. I finished it with three coats of gloss poly.. . . Alan Young
