Chris Knob's Entertainment Center

HEAVY-DUTY ENTERTAINMENT
Solid cherry cabinets with maple door panels were a bear to move.

SHOP OWNER: Chris Knob

These are photos of a cherry and figured maple entertainment unit I made for a client last year. They wanted something to match their wide cherry flooring in the great space in their living room. (Notice the kitty declaring the delivered piece as her own!!!)
All six carcases are dovetailed together using a Leigh dovetail jig. The tops of the cabinets are visible from a loft in the living room and show the dark end grain pins surrounded by the wide crown molding.
The center unit is actually two separate carcasses made from wide 5/4 cherry boards. The doors of the top unit open and slide into the case on Accuride sliding hardware. There is a pivoting extension turntable for the television as well as an internal carcase with shelving for electronic components.

All of the door panels are book matched curly maple slightly ambered with an antique honey brown aniline dye and are housed in quatersawn cherry frames. The shelves in the two side units are fixed in dovetailed grooves. The backs of the side units are cherry veneered plywood--the client's choice, not mine! Adjustable shelves in the three lower cabinets provide vented storage for electronics and the upper and lower cabinets of the center unit have openings for communication between them.
The lower and upper side moldings are attached on sliding dovetail keys to allow movement of the solid cherry sides. The finish is five coats of thinned quick-drying polyurethane wiped on and rubbed out to a satiny finish. Total time invested was about 150 hours. It weighs a ton and they love it.
