A MODEST LITTLE JEWELRY BOX
...about as modest as a Fabergé egg!
SHOP OWNER: Kurt Allen
LOCATION: Powder Springs, GA
Here are a couple shots of my most recent jewelry box design. This one was my prototype, and it changed a lot before I found the proportions I liked. It was a gift for my sister and I have four more in the works. (Lots of women in the family!)
I've built a few jewelry boxes and humidors with the same profile (1.75 in. thick at the base), but I've always wanted find a way to attach ball & claw feet. I had to carve four or five different prototype feet before I got it right. Luckily, the rejects make great children's blocks!
The box is about 9 in. tall, 11 in. deep, and 15 in. wide. The carcass is curly cherry with ebony accents at the corners, and the top is a solid slab of madrone burl. The badge on the front is solid ebony with cherry inlay. The Japanese Kanji symbol means "beauty" or "excellence."
The inside of the box is partitioned with fiddleback maple and ebony and the trays are made from the same chunk of burl as the top. I finished it with tinted oil and about 12 coats of wax.. . . Kurt Allen
