KNOCKDOWN CRADLEThis cherry and walnut piece comes apart for shipping.

Here's a photo of a cradle I just completed for my soon-to-arrive grandson. The cradle is made of cherry and walnut, the cherry coming from a source I found through WoodFinder. The walnut is from a plank that I have had for over 20 years, never wanting to cut it up, always using the excuse it would be used for something special. Well the birth of a grandchild is as special as it gets.
The grandchild will be in Michigan and I live in Central Texas, so the cradle has to be a knockdown affair so it can be boxed and shipped. I made the cradle portion as a single unit, but the base is built to knock down. The base stretcher is stub-tenoned into the uprights and attached to them with barrel bolts. The cradle portion is frame-and-panel with individual slats forming the panel area.
The approximate size of the cradle is 36" L x 32" H x 24" W. All the joinery is mortise-and-tenon or bridle joints, and the finish is multiple coats of Bartley's gel varnish.
All told, I have about 50 hours work involved, which is nothing compared to the lifetime of joy a grandchild will bring.. . . Ken Winningham
