BENCH OF DREAMS
Not one, but TWO! tail vises, and an Emmert for good measure.

Howdy! I thought I'd send a few pictures of my workbench, which I had the great fortune to be able to build in '98. AW readers will recognize one of the major influences on the design as Robert Whitley's bench. Other influences are from The Workbench Book, by Scott Landis; a number of other bench articles and photos from a variety of woodworking publications; posts on forums like this one; and my own imagination.
The top of the bench is hard maple, the base is red oak, the pulls are ebony-stained birch, the vise is an Emmert K-1, and the tail vises are built with German hardware. The double dovetails are the first I've ever done, and were a lot of work. I flattened the top with hand planes.
Top dimensions are roughly 3 ft. x 9 ft., including tail vises. I built a nice array of wood bench dogs: square on the sides, and round ones in line with the Emmert vise dogs. There is also a pair of edge dogs, and the sliding board jack. The drawers are fitted with ball-bearing full-extension slides.
I am still amazed that all the circumstances came together for a time to allow me to build my dream bench. It turned out better than I had hoped, and The Big Carpenter must certainly have been watching over me for this one. He knows me to not be a religious sort, but I am most grateful for His help and I hope He thinks I did a decent job, flaws & all....Jon Leppo
