You've never seen Cedar of Lebanon like this!
SHOP OWNER: W. Patrick Edwards
LOCATION: San Diego, CA Here are some photos of an English-period Hepplewhite work table I made earlier this year. The original had a superb single piece of satinwood in the top oval which was 37cm x 68cm.
When I went to Paris in March, I asked Patrick George, a fourth-generation veneer dealer, for something comparable. He offered me a flitch of four sheets of Cedar-of-Lebanon veneer, sawn in England in 1850, which was never sold.
Although the back of the original was not finished, I choose to veneer the back of my copy with the fourth sheet of the flitch. It was absolutely the most exciting figure in wood I have ever seen.
All the carcase work is by hand in solid mahogany with animal glue. The other veneers are all sawn: purpleheart, tulip, curly maple, boxwood, harewood, Cuban mahogany and ebony. The finish is traditional French Polish.
I sold it the same day it was finished for $17,000....W. Patrick Edwards
