Maple Octopus

DENIZEN OF THE DEEP
Frank Klausz carves an octopus to help a friend in need.

SHOP OWNER: Frank Klausz
LOCATION: Pluckemin, NJ

Frank Klausz's annual Christmas party is always a delightful affair. You never know what recent tours de force Frank is going to have on display.

Last night's (12/23) party was no exception. Frank proudly displayed a six-foot, wall-mounted solid maple octopus he had recently completed to help his friend Victor finish a truly remarkable sculpture commission. Victor, a Russian-born master carver, designed the pieces and had carved much of the first octopus when he was diagnosed with cancer almost a year ago. Frank volunteered to keep the job moving along while Victor was incapacitated.

Detail of Octopus
So, over the past couple months, Frank personally carved the octopus shown here. It is one of a pair of the giant, mirror-image sculptures commissioned for an architectural setting. Each has 714 turned "suction cups" of different diameters depending on their positions on the tentacles. At this point in his career, Frank must figure he's just about seen it all...until the next "off-the-wall" commission comes along.
