TWO SWEET REPROS
A walnut clock and a mahogany lowboy.
SHOP OWNER: Michael Andrews
LOCATION: Chadds Ford, PA
I live just north of Chadds Ford, PA, along the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek. I have a small shop located on an old farm. It is in a refurbished chicken coop, not much to look at. Most of my machines are old Walker-Turner equipment, with some new additions here and there.
The photos shown here are two of the reproductions I have made. The mahogany lowboy is a hybrid design, with a Salem-style apron and a French-style snail foot. I finished it with a oil-varnish-turpentine mixture with no stain.
The second image is of a walnut clock. It is copied from a picture of a clock made by a Shaker preacher named Benjamin Youngs. I believe it is up in Watervliet, NY. The walnut was aired dried for about twenty years before I got my hands on it. It was like carving cold butter. I filled the grain before finishing and made the stain from walnut husks soaked in ammonia. The final finish is shellac.
